Dahlonega Weather Hurricane Irma Saturday PM Update

Hurricane Irma continues to churn just off the coast of Cuba.  It is fixing to start the turn to the NW and then north up the east side of Florida and is now expected to make landfall somewhere south of Tampa and track inland up through south Georgia to just east of Columbus and then into NE Alabama.  This is a tad further west than what was showing on Friday but it doesn’t change much of what we can expect on Monday.

So what is that?

– High winds gusting to 50 mph or higher at times.  Higher elevations could be higher.

– Heavy rain on the order of 2-4 inches.

– Power outages from downed trees due to high winds.

– Isolated threat of a tornado that would develop and move very rapidly.

Timing is rain should move in near sunrise Monday give or take an hour or so.  Winds should be gusting to near 30 in the AM hours and gradually increase through the day peaking late afternoon into the early night.  It does appear the worst might arrive a little earlier so hopefully it will be  over for the most part before midnight Monday.

At this point in time I would be very surprised if something happened to change this forecast for the better as we are inside 48 hours now.  So do what you need to do Sunday in preparation for potential high winds and or power outages.

I post more updates as necessary on Sunday.  So in the meantime enjoy our breezy day coming up before Monday arrives.

Honestly, I think we’re too far north. Neither of us have had any warnings to not come into work. We keep seeing flash flood warnings online, but we’re on the top of a hill so I’m sure we’ll be okay. It’s supposed to happen here at night between Monday and Tuesday morning. We will see, definitely keep you updated
